Asylum stages a series of paranormal events in the cells and hallways of the former Athens Lunatic Asylum in Athens, OH (a selection).
“Like most abandoned buildings, the Ridges, as the asylum is now called, is believed to be haunted. Many elaborate stories circulate. They are repeated, embellished; they play a significant role in the town’s identity as a charged spiritual site. These stories are what drew me to Athens and the Ridges.
I photographed in the former women’s dormitories. Rather than document the site, I use it as a staging ground to project the imagined spirits of this place. The forms in these photographs move through the space and, at times, seem to directly face the viewer. Like Apparition, the figures animate these spaces and give shape to the stories surrounding this place.”
